Stand on it, jump on it, stomp on it but the stubbornly hard shell of an ostrich egg holds the contents without breaking.

JP,

I just wonder how the baby ostrich can break the shell from within!

Wow, that egg is really HARD! :)
Do they use hammer to break the egg open? Or an axe?? ahhaha

Saw the owner using a small power drill - I'm not joking! Perhaps, when it is time for the chick to hatch, the shell becomes thinner, making it easier for the chick to break free.

I have an ostrich egg at home with intricate drawings carved on it. It's an exquisite work of art. The invaluable workmanship was a gift from one of my mother's old flames, I think.

"Ostriches reared entirely by humans may not learn to direct their courtship behaviour at other ostriches, but instead may do so at their human keepers." - extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostrich.

Tony, that's a bizarre behaviour, if I'd read your post correctly :-)
